Ayurveda Pregnancy Care

Ayurveda prescribes specific nutritional measures for the growth and protection of the woman to keep her vital and pure

Motherhood is an important phase of every woman’s life. Pregnancy although being a physiological state, carries risk of various diseases. So  Ayurveda pregnancy care or Garbhini Paricharya plays a key role in maintenance of health of the mother and the foetus. Antenatal care or Ayurveda pregnancy care includes the proper nutritious diet, lifestyle, pregnancy exercise/ yoga , pregnancy massage , medicated bath.

“ evam kurvathi hi arogya – bala-varna – samvahana- sampadana upetam  jnatinam shreshtam apathyam jayanti” If a pregnant woman is taken care as advised , she will give birth to a child who does not have any diseases – a healthy, physically strong, radiant & well nourished baby. He/she will be superior to all in the race.

According to Ayurveda, the process of child delivery is caused due to vata activity. Vata will be immensely increased soon after delivery. Hence special care to balance vata and to strengthen the mother is very necessary.

After pregnancy and delivery , there will be changes both physically and emotionally; like lack of sleep, taking care of baby , anxiety over baby’s health, hormonal changes, wondering and worrying about your body shape, etc affect during the post partum period. This post partum period is considered as a highly sensitive period and all the post partum care systems as per Ayurveda place a great emphasis on encouraging fast healing, boosting immunity and improving the production of milk.

Oil massage is known to increase blood circulation, relieve tension in muscles and melt away stress. It soothes the aching body and ease the process recovery. It increases production of oxytocin that will result in better breast millk flow. Oil massage is the right step forward towards your old health and glow.

Note:

For Normal delivery oil massage can start from 7th day after the delivery. For c – section , need to give the wound some time to heal before starting the massage, generally starts on 14th day after delivery. Please confirm with your doctor before starting the massage. Ideally you need to continue the massage routine for first 40 days to get maximum benefits.
Packages are for 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 28 days, 40 days & 56 days.

Medicated hot water / steam bath is practiced during the post partum period. It helps to strengthen the lowerback , ligaments, muscles, tendons , joints of the whole body.It soothens skin and relieves pain.

Diet during post natal period in Ayurveda is designed in such a way to balance the vata dosha. The digestive system is also very sensitive during the period, so Ayurveda insists of start with eating easily digestable food and gradually go back to regular diet towards the end of confinement period.

  • Warm, fresh, oily foods that tastes sweet like honey, rice, fresh fruits are focused.
  • Cold foods are avoided as they are hard to digest and will draw water from the body causing constipation and promote gas formation.
  • Timing and quantity of meals are another important factors. There should be 5 hours gap between each meal.
  • Dried fruits can be taken.
  • Kashayams, arishtas and lehyams will be given to the mother to rebuilt the resistance power, increasing the lactation and rejuvenate the body after delivery.

A warm oil massage after the umbilical cord falls off is one of the best things you can do for your Baby. It starts at the head and end at the feet. Also include baby exercises like cycling the legs and flexing the leg against the belly, etc. this helps their digestive tract and overall tone and flexibility. Follow the massage with a warm bath. When dressing the baby, will place a few rasnadi choornam on the head over the soft spot to protect the brain and the very sensitive marma points located here. Doing this in the morning as a good start to the day.

Ayurveda has a special belly wrapping technique. A long piece of fine cotton cloth is wrapped around the abdomen a few times and pulled snug without tightening too much. This helps to strengthen the back and restore muscle and organs back to normal position.

Note:

For Normal delivery, you can start tying your belly even after a few hours of birth.
For c section, you need to wait couple of weeks (or more depending on your wound’s healing) to start tying the belly.

Weight gain during pregnancy affects the mother in many ways. It affects her self confidence to the core leading to depression or other issues.
Ayurvedic weight loss ensures to offer the safest as well as the most effective care keeping in mind the condition of post pregnancy. Weight loss in post pregnancy is different because the body of a woman after delivery is vulnerable to many issues, so the weight loss program has to be done keeping up the requirements of the mother.
Ayurveda advocates weight loss solution depending on natural weight loss and the effects of the treatment are for a long term. Exercise, udwarthanam (dry powder massage) and Abhyangam (oil massage) can drastically change the body structure. Regular exercise will make the body lighter, improve digestion, make physical activities easier, reduce fat and form body muscles.
